TEN LOCAL MUSIC VIDEOS: Almost As Fun As Watching Them Play Live

Back when MTV, VH1, and BET used to play actual music videos (I think I just showed my age), you could find me glued to the TV watching everyone from Janet Jackson to N’SYNC.

These days it’s hard enough finding a snippet of a music video in between back-to-back episodes of reality television. Enter: the internet. This list of videos features a mix from local artists that gets a little sweet, a little sultry, a little smooth, and a little silly. Lucky for you, you can take the dance party out of your living room – be sure to check out some of these artists live, at a venue near you.

AF THE NAYSAYER’s “Sunday” incorporates the producer’s favorite activity – Flatland BMX. This video embodies a dreamy Sunday afternoon spent with friends practicing this artistic cycling form. His new EP – The Autodidact Instrumentals Vol. 1 – is now out on YouTube if you want to hear more.

2. Boyfriend – Jealousy

This video burns with all types of hot, sensual feels. Boyfriend doesn’t disappoint with “Jealousy.” As Boyfriend describes it to Uproxx, this song is about the suffocating desire of unrequited love for someone who is merely a friend.

Embracing Louisiana’s Cajun French heritage, Sweet Crude’s “Little Darling” is an energetic, bilingual love song. Band members are a small but fervent group of young Louisianans engaged in keeping the language alive through their art.

It’s all in the family for Cardinal Sons. Brothers and bandmates pay homage to their Mississippi upbringing with their indie rock dance anthem. Their “Day of Summer” video brings us back to our favorite season with bright pops of color, sunny skies, and a bouncy beat.

A mix of funk, R&B, and hip-hop, “The Calling” is the product of a talented musical trio – Derrick “Mr. Smoker” Freeman, M@ Peoples, and Jermaine Quiz. Remixed with Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight,” this song celebrates living the good life as a musician in New Orleans.

Like the name of the song, Yugen creates a smooth and silky metallic sound with “Gold.” The New Orleans-based sextet combines hip-hop, improvisatory ruckus jazz, and bits of progressive electronic music. Sit back and let the music infiltrate your earhole.

9. Yojimbo – Subliminal Socrates

Fronted by lead singer and trombone extraordinaire Carly Meyers, Yojimbo always brings the jams. This trio joins forces in “Subliminal Socrates” to bring a wild explosion in this unstoppable dance tune (Side note: I also really enjoy this video because there a lot of friend cameos).
